HBCU ACCESS Project
- Norfolk State University - Norfolk, VA
The university will partner with the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Urban League of Hampton Roads, Newport News Department of Social Services, Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, and the St. Grace Church of Deliverance to develop an HIV prevention and risk reduction program centered on NLM online resources. The program will use the Internet to motivate young African Americans to learn about HIV and to translate what they have learned into practice.
- Winston-Salem University - Winston-Salem, NC
This project will involve graduate students and faculty from the School of Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Studies teaching the local community how to access and use reliable Internet resources for health education. This will help individuals assume greater responsibility for their own health.
- Jackson State University - Jackson, MS
The Institute of Epidemiology and Health Services Research in collaboration with the Mississippi Urban Research Center at Jackson State will increase health literacy of the students and community members by using NLM’s resources. They will focus on the HIV/AIDS resources and incorporate them into two courses in the MPH degree program in their School of Public Health.
- Langston University - Langston, OK
The university will conduct a series of workshops using clinical case scenarios. The participants will include Langston faculty and staff, Coyle School District teachers and staff, and older adults from the local community. The curriculum of the Doctor of Physical Therapy students will be enhanced to include competency in using NLM resources. These students will then provide the training to other health professionals and community members.
